Minister of Health Dr Abdulla Khaleel, has disclosed plans for a 100-bed hospital in Villimale’.

Set to commence next year, the construction aims to bolster healthcare accessibility for residents while alleviating the burden on hospitals in Male’ City.

Minister Khaleel outlined the primary objectives of the project. The proposed tertiary-level hospital will specialise in treating critical diseases and will embrace an environmentally friendly design.

Minister Khaleel revealed that the collaborative efforts of the Chinese government will support the construction, with the hospital expected to be operational within three years from the commencement of the project.

A high-ranking official from China recently visited Villimale’ Hospital, currently managed by Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, CEO of IGMH, underscored the challenges faced in delivering adequate services due to spatial limitations at Villimale’ Hospital.

He assured that the construction of the new hospital would only begin after ensuring the provision of basic health services to residents, with the deployment of a sea ambulance to address emergencies.

Villimale’ Hospital currently operates around the clock, equipped with a five-bed emergency room and three inpatient rooms. However, it offers a limited range of services and lacks an operating theatre. Specialist doctors from IGMH travel to Villimale’ Hospital to provide specialized treatment, and patients in need of emergency care are transferred to IGMH.

The impending construction of the new hospital is anticipated to address and resolve these existing challenges, enhancing healthcare services for the residents of Villimale’.
