Gov’t Pledges to Lift Restrictions on Island Solar Power Installations

The Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, has pledged to address the current restrictions on solar power installations in island areas.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the completion of a solar street lighting project in Himmafushi, supported by the Chinese government, Minister Shareef emphasised the government’s commitment to enhancing local councils’ capabilities.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to resolve challenges faced by councils and to empower them with the necessary resources to better serve their communities.

Minister Shareef stated, “Our top priority is to facilitate councils in providing the services that people demand. We are formulating policies to reduce operational costs and offer additional financial benefits to councils.” He confirmed that the government plans to increase the limit on solar installations in rural areas.

Under the solar street lighting project, 165 lights have been installed on various islands, operating entirely on solar power.

The minister also acknowledged the Chinese government’s support in implementing projects across the islands and at the national level. By the end of the current administration’s term, the government aims to transition one-third of the Maldives’ energy consumption to renewable sources.
