Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) started the land reclamation and coastal protection project of Kaafu Atoll Gulhi last night.
The ceremony to mark the commencement of the Gulhi land reclamation project took place last night in Gulhi, with the Managing Director of the company, DCP (retired) Ahmed Saudhee, the President of Kaafu Atoll Gulhi Council Moosa Safeel, and senior officials from both organisations in attendance.
The project was awarded to MTCC on March 20, 2023, during the previous administration, but its launch has been delayed for various reasons.

MTCC announced that the project will add 10.15 hectares of land to the island. It will also involve the construction of a 10,962-metre stone revetment, a 362-metre geobag revetment, and an 88-metre grain revetment.
Gulhi, with a population of around 800, currently hosts up to 15 guesthouses. One of the key issues raised by residents is the shortage of space for both living and other purposes.
During his visit to Gulhi in January, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assured the completion of the land reclamation project. He acknowledged that while the previous administration had approved the project, it had not allocated funding for it. However, he confirmed that despite this challenge, the project will proceed under the current administration, aligned with the vision of the island council.
