The government decided to award additional housing points to applicants who are caring for their parents and other elderly dependents.
This policy change, based on a paper submitted by the Ministry of Social and Family Development, aims to support families in accommodating senior citizens within their households.
The President’s Office announced that this new policy, initiated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, will be implemented in the forthcoming housing schemes. These schemes are designed to facilitate multi-generational living arrangements, promoting the well-being of senior citizens within family settings.
He emphasised the government’s commitment to prioritising marginalised groups, including senior citizens, in housing projects. He stated that individuals caring for elderly dependents would receive preferential treatment in housing allocations.
Additionally, provisions would be made to allow independent senior citizens to apply for social housing.
