President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced on Thursday that the government is assessing the feasibility of closing schools for Ramadan each year during his term without reducing the total number of teaching hours.
He made this announcement during the first episode of Rayyithunnaa Eku, a podcast hosted by the President’s Office. Speaking on the podcast, which translates to With the Citizens, he noted that this year’s academic calendar initially scheduled schools to remain open for one week of Ramadan. However, after receiving positive feedback from parents, the government extended the closure to the full month. He stated that the Administration now intends to continue this practice annually.
President Muizzu highlighted the benefits of closing schools during Ramadan, explaining that it would give students and parents more time for worship. He also reaffirmed that declaring the last ten days of Ramadan as government holidays aims to facilitate religious observances.
Discussing key initiatives to support the public during the holy month, he outlined the financial relief measures introduced last Ramadan, which continue this year. These include concessions on utility bills and the provision of staple food items to households.
Emphasising the importance of celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr, President Muizzu noted that strong government support for such festivities helps instil a love for Islam, particularly among children. He highlighted several nationwide initiatives designed to promote a deeper understanding and practice of Islam.
