Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, revealed plans to establish permanent mosques in Hulhumale’ Phase 2, catering to the needs of the rapidly growing population in the area.

The initiative aims to accommodate approximately 9,000 people, with the first mosque, capable of seating 1,400 individuals, set to be operational by the beginning of Ramadan on March 11.

Hulhumale’ Phase 2 is identified as one of the wards in the Maldives experiencing the fastest population growth.

Following a visit to Hulhumale’ to oversee mosque construction, Minister Saeed disclosed that five private companies are involved in building these permanent structures. The inaugural mosque, developed by Muni Homecare, a construction and furniture company, is expected to be completed before Ramadan commences.

Minister Shaheem expressed gratitude towards private businesses and companies, acknowledging their significant financial contributions to the construction of permanent mosques in Hulhumale’ Phase 2.

Details of Permanent Mosques in Hulhumale’ 2:

  • Muni Homecare Mosque: Accommodates 1,400 (Opening before Ramadan)
  • SJ Construction Mosque: Accommodates 3,000
  • ‘Gadhage’ Ahmed Saleem and Family Mosque: Accommodates 1,160
  • Private Party Mosque: Accommodates 700
  • Sun Front Mosque: Accommodates 2,800

Additionally, a temporary mosque built by HDC accommodates 100 worshippers. Minister Shaheem clarified that, excluding the HDC mosque, all others would be permanent structures.

Minister Shaheem highlighted the prevalent practice of developing temporary mosques in Hulhumale’ and emphasised President Muizzu’s objective to replace them with permanent ones. He expressed optimism that the completion of these mosques would transform Phase 2 into an area adorned with beautiful and complete permanent structures.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs is actively encouraging the early completion of these mosques, with Minister Shaheem personally visiting the construction sites on Thursday to oversee progress and reinforce the importance of timely completion.
