The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has announced that the government will provide a case of 48 tuna cans to each household in preparation for the upcoming Ramadan.

This initiative was first revealed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in November last year during a ceremony marking his first year in office.

To meet this commitment, MIFCO has stated that an additional 100,000 tuna cans need to be produced, and preparations are currently underway to achieve this target. The company has also disclosed that production is being carried out in collaboration with the State Trading Organisation (STO).

The government’s approach this year replaces the previous practice of distributing staple foods. Last Ramadan, 1.6 million kilograms of staple foods were distributed to 82,000 households, alongside MVR 142 million in discounts on water and electricity supplies.

Currently, a case of regular tuna in oil cans is priced at MVR 560, with individual cans costing MVR 16. Based on these rates, supplying cases of tuna cans to 82,000 households would amount to over MVR 46 million.

MIFCO has indicated that production is expected to conclude in February, after which the distribution process will commence. The company is presently finalising plans for how the distribution will be organised.
