Gov’t to Establish Community Centers for the Elderly

In a move towards enhancing the well-being of its senior citizens, the Republic of Maldives has initiated the construction of Community Centers for the Elderly as part of the Haftha 14 Roadmap Pledge No. 6.11.
The Ministry of Social and Family Development has taken the lead in this initiative, marking the commencement of construction with the conversion of a previously used site in Malé, formerly dedicated to the operations of the Center for Holy Quran. The task of renovating this facility has been officially entrusted to Sifainge Welfare Company Pte Ltd (SIWEC), the welfare company of the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), following a formal agreement signed on 26th December 2023. The undertaking aligns with the Government’s Hafthaa 14 Roadmap pledge, specifically No. 6.11.
Plans are underway to replicate these Community Centers for the Elderly in Hulhumalé and other atolls, with discussions ongoing with various stakeholders. The Ministry reports an expression of interest and support for this initiative in Ministerial meetings and online sessions with Atoll and City Councils. Notably, F. Nilandhoo Council has taken a proactive stance, committing to a designated location and completing site inspections for a facility. Further initiatives are in progress to establish similar facilities in Noonu and Alif Alif Atoll within the first 14 weeks of the current Administration.
These envisioned facilities are designed to enrich the lives of the elderly community through specialized programs and services, promoting healthier living in old age. To ensure comprehensive and high-quality services, collaborative efforts with the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), and other relevant Non-Governmental Organisations is to be established, culminating in a comprehensive Activity Calendar.
