Gov’t to Install 38 MWh Battery Energy Storage System in 18 Islands

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has announced the installation of a 38 Mega Watt Battery Energy Storage System (BAS) along with an Energy Management System (EMS) in 18 residential islands as part of the Accelerating Sustainable System Development Using Renewable Energy (ASURE) project. The systems will be installed on the following islands:
- Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo – 2000 Kilowatt hours
- Shaviyani Milandhoo – 2500 Kilowatt hours
- Noonu Holhudhoo – 1500 Kilowatt hours
- Noonu Manadhoo – 3000 Kilowatt hours
- Noonu Velidhoo – 3000 Kilowatt hours
- Raa Alifushi – 2000 Kilowatt hours
- Raa Hulhudhuffaaru – 1500 Kilowatt hours
- Baa Dharaavndhoo – 2500 Kilowatt hours
- Baa Thulhaadhoo – 3000 Kilowatt hours
- Meemu Mulah – 2000 Kilowatt hours
- Meemu Muli – 2000 Kilowatt hours
- Meemu Veyvah – 500 Kilowatt hours
- Meemu Rainmandhoo – 500 Kilowatt hours
- Thaa Guraidhoo – 2500 Kilowatt hours
- Thaa Thimarafushi – 3000 Kilowatt hours
- Gaafu Alifu Maamendhoo – 1000 Kilowatt hours
- Gaafu Dhaalu Faresmaadhodaa – 3000 Kilowatt hours
- Gaafu Dhaalu Gahdhoo – 2500 Kilowatt hours
The primary objective of the project is to increase the use of electricity generated from renewable energy sources. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has set a target to generate 33 percent of the country’s electricity from renewable sources.
The installation of the 38 MWh battery energy storage system will enable the connection of additional solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity to the grid, while also supporting grid stabilisation. It will allow for the installation of solar PV systems across these islands, including on residential rooftops as part of the “My Solar” programme.
Furthermore, the project is expected to result in significant environmental and financial savings, with an estimated reduction of 8.4 million litres of diesel annually and a cost saving of approximately MVR 125 million per year in fuel expenses.
