The government has awarded the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) the contract to tarmac the remaining unpaved section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, stretching from the Hulhumalé ferry terminal to the local market.
While much of Boduthakurufaanu Magu was tarmacked during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, the section from the ferry terminal to the Rasfannu area remained undeveloped.
A ceremony marking the official launch of the road development project was held recently, where Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr Abdullah Muththalib, signed the agreement on behalf of the ministry. MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudhee represented the company.
The project, which covers 830 metres of road, will include the installation of two lanes in each direction. It will span from the Hulhumalé ferry terminal to the local market. To facilitate the road expansion, part of the lagoon will be reclaimed using sheet piling. Additionally, the project will incorporate a drainage system, gates, road markings, and signboards.
The contract is valued at MVR 144 million, with MTCC tasked with completing the project within 455 days.
Major Road Upgrades Planned for Northern Outer Ring Road in Malé
In a related development, the government has awarded MTCC another contract for the widening and modernisation of the northern side of the outer ring road in the capital, Malé. This project, valued at USD 9.4 million, will also be completed within 455 days.
It will cover an 830-metre stretch from the MTCC Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the local market and includes the extension of the quay wall, the installation of drainage systems, construction of sidewalks, and the addition of road markings and signage.
This initiative follows a previous announcement by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who outlined plans to upgrade the area surrounding the Izzuddin Jetty to modern standards within the year. Minister Dr Muththalib highlighted that the area is one of the busiest in Malé and assured that the project would be managed to minimise traffic disruption.
MTCC Managing Director Saudhee expressed confidence in completing the work ahead of schedule, given the high volume of public activity in the area.
The road redevelopment plans for Malé and Vilimalé are being supported under a grant aid programme from the Chinese government, with a feasibility study currently underway. However, the section between the MTCC Henveiru Ferry Terminal and the local market falls outside this initiative and is instead being funded by the state.
