President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the decision to relocate the planned airport project in Raa atoll’s Beriyanfaru to Fainu within the same atoll.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih initially announced the airport development project in Beriyanfaru officially in June last year. The relocation of this airport was a significant pledge made by Dr. Muizzu during his campaign.
The airport development in Fainu was initially planned during the tenure of former President Abdulla Yameen. Muizzu, on August 30th last year, reaffirmed his commitment to following through with this initiative.
During Solih’s administration, the government sought a contractor for the project with an estimated cost of USD 23.6 million for the airport’s development.
Solih stated that his government was motivated to pursue the project due to the lack of domestic aviation infrastructure in the atoll.
