In a move to empower local youth and safeguard national interests, the Maldivian government has unveiled plans to reserve job opportunities in 21 diverse fields exclusively for Maldivians.

During a press conference at the President’s Office, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy, disclosed that the Higher Education, Labor, and Skills Minister initiated discussions on this matter during the recent Cabinet meeting.

Following deliberations, various professions have been categorised, with a focus on nurturing indigenous talent. Among the fields earmarked for Maldivians are hairdressing, beauticians, babysitting, personal trainers, electricians, guest relations officers, tour guides, divers, photographers, electrical engineers, housekeeping managers, human resource managers, front office managers, accountants, imams, nurses, teachers, inspectors, surveyors, site supervisors, and pilots.

Preparations are already in motion to formally designate these fields as reserved areas for Maldivians, according to the President’s Office. Nazim emphasised that the decision was reached following President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu’s recommendation, and the Cabinet has directed the commencement of necessary preparations and the formulation of a schedule for the implementation of these reserved areas.

The move is seen as a measure to address concerns about the significant presence of foreign workers in the Maldives, with a particular focus on ensuring that a multitude of ordinary jobs are no longer predominantly held by non-Maldivians.
