The government has handed over a newly constructed flood drainage system in Thinadhoo to the island’s city council.
The handover was formalised during a ceremony held yesterday, with Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim and Thinadhoo City Council Mayor Saud Ali signing a memorandum of understanding.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Thoriq underscored the importance of the drainage system in mitigating the challenges faced by the residents due to flooding, which has historically plagued Thinadhoo. He highlighted the severe disruptions and damages caused by heavy rains, affecting pedestrians, school students, parents, and private properties including homes and vehicles.
The drainage system project, valued at MVR 48.3 million, was executed by Senok Trade Combine Pvt Ltd under the supervision of consultancy firm Riyan Pvt Ltd. The project, awarded through a competitive bidding process conducted by the Ministry of Finance, involved extensive infrastructure development.
Key features of the project include the installation of 5.3 kilometres of aqua cells, a network of HDPE pipes spanning 9.6 kilometres, eight pump stations, and eight sea outflows. These enhancements are expected to significantly alleviate the flooding issues on the island.
