Gov’t Unveils Plan to Increase Legal Tobacco Age to 21

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to raise the legal age for trading tobacco and tobacco products to 21, alongside banning the importation and use of vaping devices in the country. 

These measures aim to deter young people from adopting this harmful habit. Muizzu shared this news via a post on his official X account last evening.

The government has revealed that amendments to the Tobacco Control Act will be presented in Parliament today, marking a significant step in the Government’s efforts to curb tobacco consumption in the Maldives.

Muizzu also noted that the amendments will propose stringent enforcement measures to address violations of the Tobacco Control Act.
