President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that his administration will not influence the legal proceedings of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
During a community gathering in Feydhoo, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu addressed concerns over delays in Yameen’s legal proceedings, dismissing any allegations of interference in the former president’s court case.
The president affirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the independence of the judiciary and facilitating a fair and transparent trial for Yameen. He reassured the public that every member of his administration is dedicated to upholding the principles of justice and fairness.
Political leaders should be allowed to operate freely within the bounds of the law, remarked President Muizzu.
However, former Maldivian vice president Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, a close aide and lawyer to Yameen, has expressed skepticism towards President Muizzu’s remarks. Jameel criticized the delay in fulfilling promises to free Yameen and alleged undue influence over the judiciary, raising concerns about the fairness of the legal process.
President Muizzu’s statements come amidst heightened political tensions ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, with stakeholders closely monitoring developments surrounding Yameen’s case.
