Hanimaadhoo Airport Project 67.5% Complete, Deadline Set for March

The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure announced today that 67.5 percent of the Hanimaadhoo Airport project has been completed, with the entire project slated for completion by the end of March 2025.

The airport is being constructed with funding from a concessional Line of Credit (LoC) of USD 800 million extended by the Indian Government.

Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen, and High Commissioner of India to Maldives Munu Mahawar visited Hanimaadhoo to observe the progress.

The Ministry reported that the work, conducted by Indian contractor Kalpataru Projects, is progressing well. The project includes a 2.7-kilometre runway, a terminal with the capacity to cater to 1.3 million passengers annually, and a jet fuel storage facility.

The Ministry further detailed that 97 percent of the 2,400-metre runway and apron has been completed, with the section currently in use. The completion of the runway is expected by November.

In addition, 75 percent of the air traffic control tower and 51.4 percent of the passenger terminal have been completed. The fuel farm and fuel jetty are at 44.5 percent completion, with the assembly of tankers in progress. Moreover, 50 percent of the airport roads and 55 percent of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) centre have been finished.

The new airport will accommodate A320 and Boeing 737 flights. Exim Bank of India is investing USD 136 million in the project.
