The Ministry of Health has announced plans to establish a registry for patients in the atolls who are on long-term medication for chronic illnesses and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The initiative aims to ensure that patients have uninterrupted access to essential medicines and healthcare services, including diagnostics, in a sustainable manner.

The ministry has confirmed that the compilation of the registry will begin in Shaviyani Atoll and Noonu Atoll on 1 April. Efforts to extend the initiative to other atolls are expected to commence within the next three months.

A designated focal point has been appointed at each healthcare facility to oversee the coordination and implementation of the service.

The decision follows ongoing concerns over shortages of various medications, including commonly used ones. The government is working to address the issue through the State Trading Organization (STO).
