The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) announced today that, beginning in November, healthcare providers in the Maldives will charge out-patient services to private insurance packages before billing the national public health insurance scheme, Aasandha.

In a statement, NSPA explained that the new billing process forms part of broader reforms to streamline and sustain the Aasandha scheme. Under the revised policy, individuals holding private insurance will have their out-patient services billed to their private policies first. Only after exhausting private insurance benefits will Aasandha coverage apply.

This shift will be implemented in phases, with out-patient services undergoing the initial change as of 1 November.

NSPA assured the public that individuals will retain full Aasandha coverage once private insurance benefits are depleted, or if a specific service is not covered under the private insurance policy.

Additionally, NSPA reminded individuals to keep receipts for any services availed through the Aasandha scheme. Members of the public are also encouraged to report any healthcare providers who do not comply with the new policies by contacting the Aasandha Company’s Shikaavathi chatline at 7951400. Further details regarding the scheme changes are available via the Aasandha hotline at 1400.
