Launches travelling between Malé and the atolls have started using the Henveiru Ferry Terminal today as part of efforts to address long-standing issues with boarding and disembarking.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) decided last week to allow launch ferry operators to use both the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal. Speaking at the official opening ceremony, MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee highlighted the challenges previously faced by passengers, stating that it had been difficult for them to get on and off the launches.
Saudee noted that seven launch operators had expressed interest in using the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and had begun operations today. However, no interest had been shown in using the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal so far, though it remains available for those who wish to use it. He also emphasised the importance of prioritising safety and security as operations at the Henveiru Ferry Terminal continue.
Previously, launches operating between Malé and the atolls departed from the harbour west of the official jetty and from the south harbour. This area often became overcrowded, with passengers, including tourists, frequently required to board launches from one vessel to another. Many passengers had to wait without proper shelter while carrying boxes and other items. These recent changes follow the official reopening of the renovated Izzuddin Jetty on 27 February 2025.
