The Parliament has approved the appointment of Hussain Shaheed, currently the Chief Justice of the High Court, to the vacant Supreme Court judge position.

One of the seven Supreme Court judges fell vacant following the resignation of Justice Husnu Al Suood earlier this month. Justice Suood resigned from his post after he was suspended from his post by the  Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on the ground that he had an ongoing criminal investigation against him by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Only former prosecutor general Mariam Nihayath was the first to apply for the vacant position when it was first announced. Therefore, the JSC re-announced the vacancy, and Shaheed and lawyer Rusdhullah Ibrahim applied for it in addition to Nihayath. However, the JSC decided to recommend Shaheed to President Muizzu for the position of Supreme Court judge.

The president’s letter appointing Shaheed to the post was read aloud in the parliament hall during yesterday’s meeting, during which the lawmakers decided to recommend his name to the committee. The Parliamentary Judiciary Committee then convened to review the matter and unanimously approved Shaheed’s appointment to the Supreme Court within a short period.

A total of 64 lawmakers supported Shaheed’s appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court.

Justice Shaheed has previously served as the Magistrate at Seenu Atoll Feydhoo, a Judge at the Criminal Court, and a Judge at the High Court, where he is currently the Chief Justice.
