President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to Malé Atoll focused on addressing key development challenges during the remainder of his tenure. During meetings with council members, Women’s Development Committees (WDCs), and residents, the President discussed various issues, including infrastructure, housing, education, and healthcare.

Infrastructure and Housing

Housing remains a pressing concern across several islands, with residents of Gaafaru, Himmafushi, and Thulusdhoo emphasising the urgent need for land reclamation and residential development. Thulusdhoo’s council also advocated introducing a waste management system similar to the safe waste management services inaugurated by WAMCO in Himmafushi during the President’s tour.

The President stressed that housing will be the Government’s top priority for the upcoming year, with plans to implement housing programs and optimise land use. On infrastructure, he noted that road construction projects will commence only after the completion of essential water and sewerage systems, which are being prioritised.

Education and Healthcare

Upgrades in education and healthcare emerged as common priorities across the atoll. Residents from Gaafaru, Huraa, Dhiffushi, Kaashidhoo, and Himmafushi called for the development of schools, enhanced healthcare services, and additional facilities such as scanning services and multipurpose halls.

The President committed to expanding healthcare centres, increasing school capacity, and implementing initiatives under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP). Specific projects include expanding Gaafaru’s health centre, upgrading Dhiffushi’s school to A-Level standards, and constructing a multipurpose hall for Huraa Island’s school.

Harbours and Coastal Protection

Council members from Kaashidhoo, Gaafaru, and Dhiffushi raised concerns about harbour conditions and coastal erosion. The President confirmed plans to expand and repair Gaafaru’s harbour to address medium—and long-term needs. He also assured them that shore protection measures for Dhiffushi and other affected islands would be prioritised under the PSIP framework.

Economic Development

Economic development featured prominently in discussions, with councils from Kaashidhoo, Thulusdhoo, and Himmafushi advocating for increased support in tourism, fishing, and agriculture. The President announced plans to collaborate with local councils to boost these industries while improving waste management systems and youth facilities, such as sports grounds.

Key-Takeaways

Members of the region collectively addressed challenges such as coastal erosion, healthcare infrastructure gaps, and the need to strengthen tourism and reef fishing industries. Additionally, Malé Atoll Council sought approval for the Hajj Corporation’s proposed project in Maafushi.

The President reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to addressing these issues and ensuring equitable development across the atoll. He emphasised that housing, education, and healthcare will remain the administration’s primary focus for the upcoming year, with development projects, including road construction and school expansions, aligning with PSIP policies.

The visit is part of the President’s ongoing programme of council consultations, which began earlier this year. With this latest tour, the President has engaged with 185 councils nationwide, affirming his dedication to addressing local concerns.
