The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported a total of 134 Chikungunya cases so far, with 129 cases recorded in April 2024 alone, highlighting the uncontrolled spread of the disease in the Maldives.

Analysis of the demographics reveals that the highest number of cases occurred in individuals aged 25 and above, with 115 patients from this age group testing positive for the disease. Additionally, 19 cases were reported in individuals aged 25 and below, HPA stated.

Comparing the data, the HPA highlighted a significant surge in cases during April, in contrast to the mere five cases reported in March.

Earlier advisories from the HPA emphasised the importance of eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites, such as areas with stagnant water, urging regular cleaning of such locations at least once a week.

Furthermore, the agency recommended the use of effective mosquito repellents and anti-mosquito lotions to prevent mosquito bites, which could potentially transmit the disease.

Mosquito activity typically peaks during dawn and dusk, while Aedes mosquitoes, the carriers of Chikungunya, tend to be active during daylight hours.

Symptoms of Chikungunya typically manifest within three to seven days following a mosquito bite. Patients are advised to rest adequately, increase fluid intake, and maintain a healthy diet.

The HPA also cautioned against self-medication, stressing the importance of seeking medical advice before taking any medication.

Patients experiencing swelling and persistent fever are urged to seek urgent medical attention, the HPA reiterated.
