Initially launched in September last year, the project has successfully reclaimed 23 hectares of land to date. However, reclamation efforts were temporarily halted due to a directive from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) following a significant coral bleaching event in the Maldives.
With EPA’s approval, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) recommenced the reclamation efforts last afternoon, focusing on the remaining 40 hectares.
The project faces challenges due to several ships and vessels still berthed in the Phase 3 channel. Despite multiple notices, these vessels have not been relocated. HDC has urged the owners to move their vessels immediately to prevent damage and avoid hindering the reclamation process.
The Hulhumalé Phase 3 reclamation initiative aims to address long-term housing needs for residents of the Greater Malé area. The development plan includes a series of housing flats and other accommodation options.
