Former parliamentarian for Maafannu North Imthiyaz Fahmy has been appointed as the President of The Democrats.
The Democrats announced they would be holding an internal election on February 15 to elect a President amd a Vice President to fill the vacant positions within the party. The deadline to submit applications for these positions were January 23.
Imthiyaz said since only he had applied for the position of the party president and former parliamentarian for Ungoofaaru constituency Mohamed Waheed had applied for the position for the Vice President position. The party’s national committee decided to forgo the election after the party’s national council gave them internal endorsement.
Prior to running for the President of The Democrats, Imthiyaz was the Spokesperson for the party. Waheed is currently the Chairperson for the party’s Decentralization and Local Governance Committee.
Prominent founding members, including party President Hassan Latheef, Vice President Mohamed Shifaz, former MP Ali Azim, and the Democrats’ recent presidential running mate, Hussain Amr left the party earlier this month. They rejoined the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP). The Democrats was formed during the Presidential Election of 2023 due to irreconcilable differences between President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and Mohamed Nasheed, the Chairman of MDP then.
