India has raised the quota for foodstuffs and essential supplies exported to the Maldives following a request from the Maldivian government.
In a press release issued yesterday, the Indian High Commission stated that this marks the highest quota increase since the agreement was signed in 1981.
Recognising the rapid growth of the Maldivian construction sector, India has increased the quota for construction materials, including river sand and rock aggregates, by 30 per cent. As a result, the Maldives will receive 1.3 million metric tonnes of construction materials.
The revised quota also includes a five per cent increase in imports of onions, potatoes, eggs, rice, and wheat flour. Additionally, the import of dal (pulses) has surged by 56 per cent—an unprecedented increase.
Despite imposing export restrictions on essential goods domestically, India has continued to supply these products to the Maldives.
