Air Intelligence Unit of India arrested a man earlier this month for smuggling gold worth MVR 3.7 million on a plane arriving in Mumbai from Male’.
According to Free Press Journal, the 24-year-old man from Karnataka, Inaamul Hassan, hid the gold on the plane. Officials believe the airport staff worked with Hassan to smuggle the gold in.
The Air Intelligence Unit said it received intelligence regarding the smuggling and, upon arrest and inspection, found 13 pouches of gold hidden under the light panels of the plane’s lavatory.
During the interrogation, Hassan confessed to smuggling the gold. As of January 2, the Air Intelligence Unit was working to ascertain how Hassan procured the gold and who received it.
Recently, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence uncovered a syndicate involved in smuggling gold into India. Passengers acted as carriers, concealing the contraband in the aircraft’s waste cart upon arrival. Another member of the syndicate would then retrieve the hidden gold, which was ultimately delivered to a female associate.
