President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said today that investing in renewable energy is important for the future of a low-lying country such as the Maldives.
In his message, which was posted on the President’s Office’s website to celebrate International Day of Clean Energy, he stressed the importance of reducing global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and switching to clean energy resources.
“The Maldives has made great strides in advancing renewable energy, particularly through solar power initiatives,” he said, noting the country had set a target of generating 33 percent of its electricity via renewable resources.

“The Energy Act and the roadmap for the energy sector outline the nation’s plan to ensure that energy supply is sufficient, reliable, sustainable, secure, and affordable,” Muizzu said.
He noted the commitment made by the country’s private sector through investments in renewable energy. He also extended his gratitude to the global partners that finance the Maldives’ aspirations to transition to green energy.
He added that Small Island Developing States need additional support in the up coming years.
“I reaffirm the Government’s commitment to protecting our islands, fostering a healthier environment and establishing the Maldives as an example for other nations to follow and strive towards clean energy for the greater benefit of the nation and planet,” Muizzu said.
