The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has announced the appointment of Justice Hussain Shaheed as the Chief Justice of the High Court.
Additionally, Judge Mariyam Waheed has been designated as the Chief Justice of the Civil Court.
The vacancies for the positions of Chief Justice of the High Court and Civil Court were filled through a contest where Justice Shaheed pursued the Chief Justice position for the High Court. Meanwhile, Justice Mariyam Waheed and Justice Hafiza Abdul Sattar vied for the role of Chief Justice of the Civil Court.
Justice Shaheed has held a tenure as a Criminal Court judge since 2018 before his appointment to the High Court in the same year. He previously served as a magistrate.
Judge Mariyam Waheed’s legal career involved a prior role as a magistrate before becoming a civil court judge in 2016. In a turn of events, a Supreme Court ruling in 2017 led to the loss of her judicial status due to a judgment issued during her service as a civil court judge.
However, in 2018, the Supreme Court reversed its decision and ordered her reinstatement to her judicial duties.
