The Kulhudhuffushi City Council has inaugurated a new nursery, named Fini Fehi Nursery, as part of its “Fini Fehi City” initiative, which aims to support long-term environmental sustainability and biodiversity enhancement.

Opened on Sunday, 20 April 2025, the nursery was officially inaugurated by Mayor Mohamed Athif. Built using the council’s budget, the facility is intended to contribute to a greener future by cultivating and supplying trees to cool and green different parts of the island, as well as for future landscaping projects.

According to the council, the nursery will prioritise planting native tree species that were once found on the island but are now extinct, as well as those currently in decline. Emphasis will also be placed on growing mulch trees to help reduce surface temperatures and improve urban greenery.

Council employees will carry out the operational work of the nursery, having already been trained through dedicated programmes. The council has announced that further training sessions are planned to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of the project.

The opening ceremony was attended by members of the City Council and a large number of council staff, many of whom marked the occasion by donating a tree to support the nursery’s mission. The initiative represents a key investment in the city’s environmental goals, including climate adaptation, ecological restoration, and sustainable urban development.
