Kulhudhuhfushi has temporarily imposed a ban on the use of canoes in its mangroves to prevent disturbances to migratory flamingos roosting in the area.

Since 2022, flamingos have been migrating to the Maldives around this time each year. This season, their first stop is the mangroves in Kulhudhuhfushi, where they are currently residing.

The Kulhudhuhfushi council issued a statement addressing concerns raised by local residents. Reports indicate that some canoeists are approaching the flamingos too closely and engaging in behaviour that disrupts the birds.

In response to these complaints, the council has decided to implement a temporary ban on canoe use in the mangroves. They have also called on the public to report any instances of canoeing or other actions that could disturb the flamingos.

Every day, many island residents visit the mangroves to photograph the flamingos, with these images frequently shared on social media.
