Land awarded to Male City Council To Develop Cat Shelter

The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has officially awarded 5000sqft in Hulhumale Phase 2 to the Male City Council to develop a cat-shelter.

The cat shelter is intended to address the increasing number of stray cats in the Male’ City area.

While the land was allocated and officially handed over to the council yesterday, the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare granted the project to the Male’ City Council in January last year.

The Ministry has allocated 5,000 sq ft of land from the second phase of Hulhumale’ for the project, which includes a cat cafe, a vet clinic and a cat shop.

The project will be carried out in phases, according to the city council. The council revealed upcoming phases will include arrangements to care for birds and other common pets, with a total of 18,000 sq ft to be allocated for the project in the future.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, the establishment of the cat shelter will provide a permanent solution to the problem of stray cat overcrowding in the city. The government aims to establish such facilities in all parts of the country, the ministry said.

The establishment of a pet care facility for the increasing number of stray cats on the streets of the city is included in the President’s Week 14 roadmap.
