The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has confirmed that the loud noise which alarmed residents of the Galolhu Kanmathi neighbourhood yesterday was not caused by an explosion, but by a technical issue with a parked vehicle.

The MNDF and police responded swiftly to reports of an explosion from a van parked in the Galolhu Kanmathi area last afternoon. The MNDF’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was dispatched to inspect the vehicle and the surrounding area.

In a press statement, the MNDF explained that the noise was believed to have resulted from a technical malfunction in the van, and there was no evidence of any explosive device. The MNDF assured the public that there was no further threat and handed over the scene to the police.

The police also issued a statement confirming that the MNDF had determined the loud noise was not due to an explosion, whether dangerous or otherwise.

During the initial response, the MNDF’s EOD unit, along with armed soldiers and police officers, conducted a thorough sweep of the van and its surroundings. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
