The Regional Airports Company has announced that the new airport under construction at M. Muli is on track for completion next year, with test flights expected to commence by March 2025.

Speaking on PSM’s Raajje Miadhu programme, the company’s Managing Director, Ahmed Mubeen, revealed that the final preparations for the airport’s opening are underway.

“Work is now being done to procure vehicles and machinery for airport operations, to complete the airport offices, and to hire and train firefighters,” Mubeen stated during the interview.

The Muli airport project began in August 2021 and was originally scheduled to open by mid-2022. However, delays in construction pushed back the timeline.

The airport, which features a 1,200-metre-long and 30-metre-wide runway, was contracted to Maldives Transport and Construction Company (MTCC) at a cost of MVR 221 million.

Meemu Atoll, home to eight inhabited islands and a population of fewer than 8,000, is one of the few atolls in the Maldives without a functioning airport. The new facility is expected to improve connectivity for the region, facilitating travel and boosting economic opportunities.
