President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially launched the “Magey Solar” programme, which provides households with opportunities to generate electricity from solar energy.
Inaugurated yesterday, the initiative seeks to reduce household electricity bills while increasing the share of renewable energy in domestic electricity generation. It is a key part of the government’s efforts to achieve the target set by Muizzu at the 28th Convention on Climate Change—generating 33 percent of household electricity from renewable sources by 2028.
Implemented through utility companies in collaboration with the government and foreign donors, the first phase of the programme will provide solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to 750 households. This marks the official commencement of system installations acquired under the initial phase.
Today we initiated the installation of solar PV systems under the Magey Solar programme. In this first phase of the programme, we will install solar PV systems in 750 households.

Under the programme, households can purchase solar PV systems in instalments through FENAKA Corporation, with the installations carried out using the net metering method. A household consuming 500 units of electricity per month could reduce its usage by approximately 80 percent with a 3 kW solar PV system.
Given the high cost of solar PV systems in the global market, the initiative aims to make installation more affordable for households by offering flexible payment options. The government intends to expand the programme further, with plans to open tenders for additional solar PV systems in the first quarter of the year.
