Maldives and UNESCO Discuss Local Cultural and Heritage Training
The Maldives and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) are considering a collaboration to bring experts in culture and heritage to the Maldives for local training programmes.
During a meeting at the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage, Minister Adam Naseer Ibrahim and Tim Curtis, Director of UNESCO and Representative to the Maldives, discussed various initiatives. Curtis also serves as UNESCO’s Senior Representative to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

Minister Naseer expressed a preference for conducting training programmes within the Maldives rather than sending Maldivians abroad for training. Curtis committed to seeking relevant expertise to support this initiative.
The discussions also addressed the protection and preservation of Maldivian poetry, the conservation of museum artefacts, and the provision of training in museum work. Additionally, efforts to include Maldivian coral stone mosques on the permanent list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites were explored.
