Additionally, a street lighting project was completed in the islands of Thimarafushi and Veymandoo in Thaa Atoll, as well as Kondey in Gaafu Alifu Atoll. These initiatives aim to enhance healthcare, education, and infrastructure across the Maldives.

In his remarks, Dr Jaishankar emphasised the importance of the Maldives in India’s foreign policy, stating that the two nations share deep historical and cultural ties. He highlighted that India’s development is closely linked with that of its neighbours, with the Maldives being a priority.

Following official meetings with Maldivian leaders, including President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, Dr. Jaishankar expressed optimism about the future of Maldives-India relations. He noted that his visit provided an opportunity to assess the progress of ongoing projects and to plan future collaborations.

During the ceremony, two new agreements were signed between the two countries. The first, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Maldives Economic Ministry, will introduce India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services in the Maldives. The second agreement, between the Maldives Civil Service Commission and India’s National Centre for Good Governance, aims to train an additional 1,000 civil service employees.

Dr. Jaishankar also underscored the significance of the India-Maldives partnership, describing it as one that has consistently delivered tangible benefits to both nations. He highlighted the recent inauguration of several India-backed projects, including the mental health and education units and the street lighting initiatives, which he said would significantly improve the daily lives of Maldivians.

During his three-day visit, Dr. Jaishankar is scheduled to meet with key Maldivian officials, including the Ministers of Finance, Economic Development and Trade, and Defence. His visit is seen as a step towards further strengthening the multifaceted partnership between the two countries.

The relationship between the Maldives and India has seen some strain in recent months, particularly following calls for the withdrawal of Indian troops from the Maldives and controversial remarks made by Maldivian officials. However, with Dr. Jaishankar’s visit, there are signs of a mending relationship, underscored by the recent high-level engagements between the two nations.

Maldivian officials have expressed a strong desire to maintain and enhance the relationship with India, with plans for President Muizzu to make an official visit to India in the coming months. As both countries work to resolve differences and build on shared interests, the foundation is being laid for what Dr Jaishankar described as “bigger and better things” in the future.
