The main objective of this rehabilitation framework, as stated by the Maldives Correctional Service, is to equip prisoners with education, skills, and opportunities to steer clear of criminal activities upon their reintegration into society. The program aims to provide them with the means to earn a livelihood.
The rehabilitation framework comprises four distinct phases. These phases include fostering discipline among prisoners, implementing psychology programs to address their mental well-being, offering education and vocational training, and engaging them in community service within the prison.
The initial phase of the program will focus on essential life skills classes, religious instruction, as well as physical training sessions such as football drills and physical education.
Earlier this year, the seventh group of female prisoners began their participation in Phase 1 of the Rehabilitation Framework on February 1. A total of 17 female inmates took part in the program.
To date, 32 prisoners have successfully completed the first rehabilitation program and have been released.
Authorities have noted that a significant portion of individuals serving sentences in the Maldives are convicted for various drug-related offenses. Consequently, plans are underway to launch the first prison-based drug rehabilitation program in Maldives next year.
It is hoped that providing proper drug treatment within the prison system will foster positive change and aid in breaking the cycle of addiction.
