Maldives Customs Services has announced that effective today, goods for personal use up to MVR 10,000 are exempt from duty, an increase from the previous limit of MVR 6,000.

The updated policy, which came into effect yesterday, raises the threshold for exempting duty on goods brought in by travellers for personal use and business samples.

According to the amendment, if the Free On Board (FOB) price determined by Customs exceeds MVR 10,000, a goods declaration form must be submitted for imports. Duty will be charged on the value exceeding MVR 10,000.

The policy also stipulates that even if the FOB is below MVR 10,000, a goods declaration form must be submitted and duty charged if Customs deems the quantity to be commercial.

For goods brought in by post, each tracking number will be treated as a separate shipment. Items sent in the same postbag under a single recipient’s name will be considered a single shipment.

Medicines brought with prescriptions for a period of up to six months will also be exempt from duty.
