Maldives Elected for the UN Commission on the Status of Women for the First Time

The Maldives was elected to the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women for the first time in yesterday’s election for the 2026-2030 term, held in New York.
In a post on X, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this was the first successful candidature of this government and showcased this administration’s commitment to the empowerment of women.
“This is the first successful candidature of this government. Demonstrating Maldives’ commitment to women empowerment,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in their post on X.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu also congratulated the Maldives’ election into the Commission, calling it a great honor.
Posting on his official X account, President Muizzu congratulated all the countries elected to the Commission.
The Commission on the Status of Women was established in 1946 to promote the advancement of women throughout the world. The Commission met for the first time at Lake Success, New York, in February 1947.
Emphasising the importance of collective partnership, he expressed the Maldives’ readiness to support the Commission in addressing key issues related to women’s rights and empowerment.

“Over the years, Maldives has made significant strides in advancing women’s rights and status both at national and international level. We look forward to working with all partners to strengthen the workings of the commission for a more inclusive future,” Muizzu said in his post.
