According to the new regulation, vessel owners in the Maldives must now ensure an adequate number of crew members remain on board when their vessels are anchored or docked at a jetty. This regulation is aimed at improving maritime safety.
The decision comes in response to recent incidents where unattended vessels have caused damage to property and posed safety risks. Authorities have observed an increasing trend of vessels being left offshore without crew, leading to dangerous situations.
Under the new rule, if a vessel is found anchored without the required crew for maintenance, its owner will face action under Article 44(f) of the Safety of Vessels Rules. Officials state that implementing this requirement will help prevent accidents, enhance security, and reduce damage to both vessels and surrounding property.
