Maldives Increases Renewable Energy Capacity by 17 MW, Says Minister 

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, has announced that the Maldives has increased its renewable energy capacity by 17 MW since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu set national targets at COP 28.

In his address at the 15th Session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly, Minister Thoriq revealed that the country’s installed renewable energy capacity has grown from 53 MW to 70 MW in just over a year.

He recalled President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s historic announcement at COP 28 in Dubai, UAE, in December 2023, which outlined plans to generate 33 per cent of the nation’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028. 

The Minister emphasised that climate change remains one of the most urgent challenges for small island developing states such as The Maldives. He called for immediate, bold action to meet the global target of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. “The global community must act now and secure the future for the people and the planet,” he stressed.

Minister Thoriq Ibrahim is attending the IRENA Assembly in Abu Dhabi, UAE, alongside the Maldives Ambassador to the UAE, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, and the Director General at the Ministry of Climate Change, Ahmed Ali.
