The Maldives, alongside more than 60 other nations, has pledged its commitment to the Global Cooling Pledge, a crucial initiative aimed at reducing emissions associated with cooling. This global endeavor, spearheaded by the COP28 UAE Presidency and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), centers on advancing energy-efficient and sustainable cooling practices while fostering international cooperation in this vital area.

The endorsement was officially announced during the launch ceremony of the pledge at COP28 yesterday. Thoriq Ibrahim, the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, participated in a panel discussion at the event. Thoriq underscored the unique challenges faced by the Maldives in the realm of cooling, citing the escalating use of cooling systems to combat heat waves intensified by climate change.

Importantly, he noted that, given the Maldives’ substantial fuel imports, a significant portion utilized for electricity and cooling, embracing solutions for reduced energy consumption and enhanced efficiency is a pivotal step. Minister Thoriq expressed gratitude for initiatives like the Global Cooling Pledge, deeming them particularly advantageous for the Maldives. He urged nations to support small islands in adapting to climate change and encouraged more countries to join the commitment.

The launch ceremony witnessed the participation of prominent figures, including UNEP Executive Secretary Inger Anderson, COP28 President Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, and U.S. Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry. The event highlighted the global consensus and collaborative efforts needed to address the impact of cooling-related emissions on climate change
