The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has announced efforts to assess damage caused by recent adverse weather conditions and to develop a warning system tailored for individual islands.
This update was provided by the Minister of State for Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Ibrahim Mimrah, during a programme on PSM News.
Minister Mimrah highlighted that the development of the new warning system is underway. The impact-based forecast system aims to predict weather damage and issue warnings specific to each island. Additionally, a separate warning system for islands and a flood warning system, which provides immediate storm alerts across different regions, was installed at the MET Office last week.
Further enhancing its capabilities, the administration plans to construct a new MET Office building in Addu City, equipped with advanced facilities similar to those in the Hulhule’ office. This new building is expected to improve weather forecasting services in the southern Maldives.
The MET Office recently celebrated its 50th anniversary on 1 August. Over the years, the agency has expanded its weather forecasting services from four hours to 24 hours a day and established branches in five regions of the country.
