Police officers in the Maldives are on the highest level of alert for the presidential election, according to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
The law enforcement agency has launched Operation Blue Wave to ensure security at polling stations across the country.
Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shakir, who serves as the Commander of Operation Blue Wave, revealed that preparations for the election commenced in December of the previous year. Over the past eight months, the police service has diligently formulated comprehensive plans. Officers are actively stationed at all polling locations and stand ready to respond effectively to any situation that may arise during and after the polling process.
In addition, Chief Superintendent Shakir emphasized that police teams have been strategically deployed, leaving no island without a police presence.
He underscored the importance of communication as a first resort in resolving any issues that may emerge and encouraged individuals to engage in the voting process peacefully. In emergency situations, the public is urged to dial 119 for immediate assistance.
Furthermore, the MPS has issued guidelines to voters, urging them to adhere to the rules at polling stations and avoid lingering after casting their ballots. The police service also called upon the public to show respect for the rights of both voters and candidates, emphasizing the need for patience until the election results are officially announced.
Police officers on duty at polling stations are equipped with body-worn cameras, underscoring MPS’s commitment to providing unwavering support to state institutions to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process.
