The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) is showcasing the Maldives’ tourism offerings at the World Travel Market (WTM) London 2024, one of the world’s premier travel trade events, held at ExCeL London from 5th to 7th November 2024. Recognised as a pivotal global platform, WTM London gathers leaders in travel and tourism to foster networking, share insights, and generate business opportunities.
This year, the Maldives is represented by a substantial delegation of 217 representatives from 91 industry partners. The Maldives’ stand, spanning 650 square metres, is designed to highlight the destination’s unique landscapes and experiences, featuring 75 co-exhibitor counters, 55 B2B meeting tables, three industry meeting areas, and a dedicated traditional corner. Visitors are invited to explore an interactive photo booth and mark their visited Maldivian destinations on a map displayed at the stand.
Throughout the event, MMPRC is engaging with travel trade professionals from the UK and globally, facilitating one-on-one meetings and providing the latest updates on Maldives tourism offerings. The Maldives aims to maintain its appeal as a secure, preferred destination, emphasising the natural seclusion offered by its unique island formations.
The UK remains a significant source market for the Maldives, ranking fourth in arrivals, with 125,016 tourists recorded by September 2024, accounting for 8.5% of the total market share. MMPRC has consistently promoted the Maldives to UK audiences this year, including the “Discover Maldives” webinar series and collaborations with leading travel operators.
On 5th November, MMPRC held the ‘Maldives Media Meet’ press conference on the sidelines of WTM, where updates on the Maldives’ sustainable tourism initiatives and appeal to UK travellers were shared. The MMPRC team also launched the ‘World’s Biggest Giveaway’ global campaign, with MMPRC’s CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree presiding. Joining him were Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal, High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Dr Iruthisham Adam, MMPRC Chairperson Abdulla Giyas Riyaz, and Vice Chairman of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), Hussain Afeef. The panel addressed questions from the media, providing insights into the Maldives’ tourism strategy.
Other highlights of the first day included the launch of ‘Destination Addu,’ celebrating the culture and natural beauty of Addu.
MMPRC’s participation in WTM London 2024 reinforces its commitment to strengthening ties with UK-based operators and media while promoting the Maldives as a sustainable, thriving travel destination. The event underscores the Maldives’ unique tourism assets and offers a vital opportunity to build on its reputation in the UK market.
