Maldives Reaches Target Record of 2 Million Tourists in 2024
Maldives has reached the target set by the government this year of 2 million tourists, marking a significant milestone for the tourism industry.
Astrid Dirnegger, an Austrian national, arrived in the Maldives this morning, 26th December 2024, officially achieving the target set for this year.
Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO & MD of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), expressed pride in the accomplishment, attributing it to the collective efforts of stakeholders across the industry. “This milestone is a source of pride for the nation and a testament to the dedication of everyone in the tourism sector,” Shiuree stated.
The Maldives has seen a steady increase in tourist arrivals in recent years, surpassing previous records. In 2022, the country welcomed 1.6 million visitors, while in 2023, it saw 1.8 million. In 2024, this upward trend continued, with a record-breaking February that saw over 217,000 arrivals, including a single-day high of 10,214 tourists on February 10th.
Key trends for 2024 show China as the top source market, contributing 13.4% of arrivals with 257,794 visitors. Russia follows with 212,685 arrivals (11.1%), and the United Kingdom ranks third with 168,460 visitors (8.8%). India, the leading market in 2023, has dropped to sixth place with 121,490 arrivals (6.3%).
MMPRC has stated that it will continue to promote the Maldives as the world’s leading travel destination globally, ensuring continued success in the international tourism market.
