Maldives Reaffirms Commitment to Global Partnerships for Peace
The Maldives Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, emphasised the importance of global partnerships in maintaining peace and security at the Global Security Forum.
Minister Ihusaan highlighted the Maldives’ longstanding tradition of balancing diplomatic relations to safeguard its sovereignty while maximising benefits from international engagements.
He noted that the Maldives, while benefiting greatly from tourism, is not immune to global security threats, including terrorism and cybercrime, which pose significant risks to both the economy and societal stability.
On the issue of cybercrime, Ihusaan warned of its far-reaching impacts on the economy and individual well-being. “Cybercrime jeopardises the privacy and financial security of Maldivian citizens as well as the integrity of businesses and government institutions,” he said, highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen cybersecurity.
The Minister also addressed the Israel-Palestine conflict, expressing the Maldives’ solidarity with Palestinian civilians and calling for an end to the ongoing violence. “As an Islamic nation committed to peace and justice, we cannot remain indifferent to the suffering and injustice inflicted upon innocent civilians,” Ihusaan declared, labelling the actions in Gaza as war crimes.
Reflecting on global power dynamics, Ihusaan noted the Maldives’ strategic position in the Indian Ocean, making it a focal point in international geopolitics. He outlined the dual opportunities and risks presented by global competition, emphasising the need to safeguard sovereignty while engaging in strategic partnerships.
Concluding his speech, Ihusaan underscored the critical role of global partnerships in addressing transnational challenges and promoting sustainable development. He praised Qatar’s contributions to global peace and called for continued support for dialogue and cooperation among nations.
