Maldives Secures Gold in Special Olympics Games
Aishat Laika Hassan, representing Maldives, claimed the gold medal in the 100m sprint event at the Special Olympics World Games held in Berlin, Germany. This victory marks Maldive’s second gold medal in the Games. In a separate achievement, Aishath Maniya Adam secured another gold medal for Maldives in the badminton competition.

Zaana Ali Shareef, also representing Maldives, finished in fourth place in the 100m running final. Both Laika and Zaana had previously participated in the 200m final held on Thursday. Zaana’s remarkable performance earned Maldives its first medal in the Games as he clinched the bronze medal. Meanwhile, Laika finished fifth in the race.
In the realm of badminton, Maniya displayed exceptional skills, prevailing over Thianka Georgieva from Bulgaria in two consecutive sets. Maniya’s victory was reflected in the scores of 21-19 and 21-1 respectively.

Notably, Maniya successfully advanced to the final after defeating competitors from Jordan and Mongolia. Aisha Afnaan Rashid, who also represents the national badminton team, served as Maniya’s coach during the tournament.
These two gold medals bring Maldives total count to three since their official participation in the Special Olympics World Games. Shifna Ibrahim had previously secured a gold medal for Maldives in the women’s 100m sprint event at the 2019 World Games held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
