The Maldives successfully reopened its borders for tourism in July 2020 after a COVID-19-induced closure and with resilient efforts, the country navigated the challenges of the pandemic and became a leading example of tourism recovery and adaptability.

The Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation (MMPRC) played a crucial role in promoting the destination through virtual tours, social media campaigns, and innovative marketing strategies.

Despite the pandemic’s initial impact, the Maldives achieved significant milestones, including the World Travel & Tourism Council’s Safe Travels Stamp. The destination worked on rebuilding its tourism industry and successfully recovered tourist arrivals, even surpassing pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2021.

China’s resumption of direct flights in 2023 significantly boosted arrival numbers, and MMPRC continued its destination marketing efforts throughout the pandemic. Notably, the Visit Maldives Storytellers’ Conference 2023 further increased global attention, showcasing sustainable tourism practices.

The Maldives received global recognition and multiple awards, cementing its position as a top travel destination. Through a combination of stringent health and safety measures, sustainable practices, innovative application of technology, and collaborative efforts, the Maldives was able to sustain the ‘Sunny Side of Life’ brand within the minds and hearts of travellers.
