Male’ City Council Launches Initiative to Remove Abandoned Vehicles

MV+ News Desk | September 21, 2024

The Male’ City Council has initiated a campaign to clear the streets of the Maldivian capital of old and abandoned vehicles.

This move aims to address the growing concern over unused vehicles that have been parked in the city’s streets for extended periods. The council noted a significant number of these vehicles, many of which have been stripped of parts such as engines, have occupied valuable space in the already congested city. With parking space at a premium in Male’, the removal of these vehicles has become a priority.

The process involves issuing notices to the owners of towed vehicles, giving them the opportunity to reclaim their property. Any unclaimed vehicles will be disposed of in accordance with the relevant regulations, with the police overseeing this aspect of the operation.

In a statement released in July, the Ministry of Transport highlighted that parked vehicles currently occupy 65 percent of Male’ City’s streets, contributing to road accidents and traffic issues. This initiative marks the latest effort by the Male’ City Council, in cooperation with the Transport Ministry and other agencies, to tackle the issue. Earlier in March, the ministry reported the successful disposal of 261 abandoned vehicles.

Male’ City Council workers were seen actively clearing the streets of abandoned vehicles on September 21, 2024.
